Wild Winds

When To Come >> Love The Weather >> Wild Winds

When: most common in late autumn.

Where: great places to experience the wind's elemental power include:

  • the top of Torglass Hill opposite Low Lodge - note the tenacious old dwarf oak, ash and hawthorn trees bent double by a lifetime of struggle;
  • Hestan Island, where you can watch the gulls battling to remain stationary in the teeth of the wind;
  • Rascarrel and Balcary, with the waves crashing against the rocks (fishermen have been swept off the rocks to their death at Balcary, so please be sensible).
  • The Mull of Galloway (1.5 hours drive) in a wild sou'westerly - feels like the end of the world.
