Summer misses Scotland's drama

The true spirit of Scotland seldom comes alive in summer. Its drama is played out in the other seasons. The summer picture really doesn't capture the atmosphere of the "Black Douglasses", the notorious "Archibald The Grim", and the tales of intrigue and assassination there!

Bring the right kit

We all know someone who unerringly has the right clothes and footwear for any occasion. One such friend, chiding himself for having packed inadequately for a recent holiday here, suggested that we devote a section of the website to a "style guide" for holidays at Gelston. When you book, we will send you:
1. A handy packing list for your holiday;
2. A list of things you can buy from us here at keen prices, e.g.:

• Tennis balls (pro quality).
• A variety of local food items (must be ordered ahead).
• Ordnance Survey maps: all the most useful local Landranger maps (1:50000, formerly 1 inch = 1 mile).
• Other maps, e.g. Harveys waterproof walker's map of the Galloway Hills.
• Walking guides (books), covering all the local hill country as well as other kinds of walk.
• Cycling guides, as well as free maps of the 7 Stanes mountain bike trails.
