Getting Here

Where We Are >> Getting Here

Drivers: Saturday is usually the best day to brave the main arteries from/to the south, esp. the M6. That's one reason why we made this our changeover day. The M6 northbound Friday p.m. and southbound Sunday p.m. can be sheer hell on bad days.

By Road - local map

For a printable PDF map in colour or mono, click a link below: depending on your browser settings, the document will either open in Adobe Reader (normally runs separately, while this web page remains open), or else you will first be asked to choose whether to save the file or open it. There's a GIF version to the right, for a quick glance or if you don't have Adobe Reader, but it's less good for printing.

Colour PDF map, printable (requires Adobe/Acrobat Reader).
Mono PDF map, printable (ditto).

By Air

Prestwick Airport is the Scottish hub for Ryanair (they call it "Glasgow Prestwick" although it's miles south of Glasgow!). There are low cost flights from an expanding range of airports in the UK and Europe. Hire a car to get here in just over an hour.

Glasgow, Edinburgh & Newcastle airports are all roughly equidistant (Glasgow marginally the nearest), and served by many scheduled flights.

By Train

  • West Coast Main Line: nearest stations are Lockerbie (50 minutes drive from Gelston) and Carlisle (1 hr), served by Virgin Trains, Trans-Pennine Express and Cross-Country trains; links to whole of Britain.
  • Lockerbie has fast trains (1 hr) to Edinburgh and Glasgow - easy to enjoy a day trip without worrying about city parking.
  • Newcastle on the East Coast Main Line has links to Carlisle.
  • Carlisle has links to Dumfries, one of the most attractive small stations in Britain.

By Helicopter
