What We Offer >> Explore The Estate >> Woods And Trees
The estate was dubbed "The Trossachs of Galloway" in the 19th century, thanks to the imaginative landscape planting by Sir William Douglas (see Gelston Castle for biog.). The magnificent stands of mature Douglas Fir at the Doach and down the glen towards Potterland give a flavour.
Grand specimens of Douglas Fir also feature in the castle policies, among other splendid specimen trees. One or two of these are quite rare. In the policies we are also embarking on an ambitious program of new planting.
Among several areas of ancient (semi-) natural woodland on the estate, the Galloway oaks of Almorness Peninsula stand out, and the birchwoods above Glenyerrock Farm.
